According to a report in the Daily Star, Leeds United are keen to sign Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson.
The 22-year-old centre-back has reportedly caught the eye of Whites’ owner Massimo Cellino, through his performances over the last season.
Mawson was a key player for Barnsley, as they earned promotion from League One last term.
The former Wycombe Wanderers defender has only been at Oakwell for a season, but he is considered to be one of the finest young talents in the Football League.
With Leeds on the look out for a new centre-back this summer, Mawson is reportedly near the top of their wishlist, but the deal could be a complicated one.
Barnsley are determined not to lose Mawson, and will put a big price-tag over his head to fend off Leeds’ interest.
Garry Monk’s transfer budget at Leeds is currently unclear, but he is on the verge of completing his first signing.
Leeds are expected to snap up Swedish striker Marcus Antonsson in the near future, with their focus now set to turn to bringing in some defenders.
