Fomer Crystal Palace defender is a Rangers target
Rangers would be able to recruit the 29-year-old defender on a free transfer, as he is out of contract at Premier League club Crystal Palace.
The Daily Record has reported that talks between the former Watford and Reading defender and Rangers are going on.
Preston winger Humphrey, who can also play as a wing-back, believes that Mariappa would be a success at Ibrox.
The 28-year-old former Motherwell man plays with Mariappa for the Jamaica national football team.
“He’s a great lad and would be a fantastic signing for Rangers – on and off the pitch,” Humphrey told The Daily Record about Mariappa. “Adrian’s a very good defender and versatile. He can play anywhere along the back line.
“He’s the type who would go out the way to do anything for you as a teammate. He would be someone who could help the younger players at Rangers develop as he’s a figure to respect and admire.
“He’d be the perfect signing for Rangers and nothing about the move would faze him because he has great experience of the Premier League – the hardest league in the world – with Watford and Palace.”
Mariappa could feature in just three Premier League matches for Palace last season.
The defender had a pass accuracy of 78%, and won five headers, three dribbles and three tackles.
Rangers will play in the Scottish Premiership next season after wining the Scottish Championship title with ease during the 2015-16 campaign.
Mark Warburton’s side have signed former Queens Park Rangers duo Joey Barton and Clint Hill among others in the summer transfer window.
