Speaking to TV3 Sport, Joey Barton has gone on to question the ability of defensive duo John O’Shea and Ciaran Clark following Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 defeat against Belgium at the European Championships on Saturday.

The Republic of Ireland’s hopes of making it into the knockout stages of the European Championships took a huge blow after they suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux.

Ireland clearly performed poorly during the clash and could have no complaints whatsoever regarding the final result.

Burnley's Joey Barton

Rangers midfielder Joey Barton was following the game closely in his role as pundit for TV3 Sport and he went on to slam the Irish backline for their display during the clash.

Barton was particularly scathing in his attack on the central defensive combination of O’Shea and Clark and stated that the presence of the duo hindered Ireland’s chances on the day.

He said, “You are hindered by the players you have got at your disposal. John O’Shea is no spring chicken and you look at the central defensive partnership of O’Shea and Ciaran Clark.

“O’Shea was part of the Sunderland side that conceded 62 goals in 38 games in the Premier League last year and Ciaran Clark, obviously, Aston Villa – bottom of the pile, 76 goals conceded in 38 games.”

Ireland now prepare to square off against Italy at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille for the final game of the group stages on Wednesday night and it goes without saying that O’Shea and Clark will need to perform much better in order for the Green Army to stand a chance of claiming something from the clash.
