Speaking to BBC Sport, Danny Murphy says that England manager Roy Hodgson has told him that Daniel Sturridge is on fire at the moment.

The Liverpool striker was the star of the show last week as he came off the bench to score a last gasp winner against Wales.

He is now expected to make his first England start at Euro 2016 in their final Group B clash with Slovakia on Monday evening as the Three Lions look to secure top place in the group.

And after impressing against the Welsh, Murphy says that Hodgson has told him that Sturridge has also been shining in training.

"I actually spoke to Roy for 20 minutes before the Wales game and it was great to catch up with him,” he told BBC Sport.

"He was talking about Sturridge being on fire in training and the fact that he can play in that wider role coming in from the right, which he has done for Liverpool and Chelsea and still scored goals from there.”

Should Sturridge start against Slovakia, he will be keen to make his mark and secure a first-team place for the knockout stages.

He headed into the tournament as a substitute at best, but with Harry Kane struggling in his first two games, a place is now open for the Liverpool star to take.

Should he impress against Slovakia, it will certainly give Hodgson a major decision to make as England attempt to go far in France.
