Leeds appear to have fought off strong interest to sign Marcus Antonsson.

Leeds United are close to wrapping up the signing of Swedish striker Marcus Antonsson, report Aftonbladet.

The Swedish newspaper claimed on Saturday that he will undergo a medical today (Monday) prior to becoming the club's first summer addition.

Antonsson is currently the top scorer in the Swedish league, and the calibre of team also interested in him should encourage them that they are making a really good move.

Aftonbladet claimed just one month ago that La Liga giants Sevilla sent scouts to watch Antonsson in action for Kalmar and are monitoring his progress.

Sevilla dispatched Premier League side Liverpool 3-1 in the Europa League final with a dominant second half display ast month and are well respected for their recruiting.

The Spanish side being beaten to the deal by Leeds may not simply be because they did not want him either, but due to their own uncertainty.

Renowned sporting director Monchi stepped down a fortnight ago and has been linked by the Liverpool Echo with moving to either Paris Saint-Germain or Everton.

Manager Unai Emery has also declared he wants to step down, The Guardian reported, leaving the club in a state of flux.

Their internal wrangling may just have allowed Leeds United to nip in and snap Antonsson up, with assistant boss Pep Clotet knowing the striker from his time at Halmstadt.

The calibre of Sevilla's current team and the fact they have Antonsson on their radar shows he is a player with real talent, and Leeds fans should feel even better about their new addition.
