Neil Lennon has told the Daily Record that he is hoping that Brendan Rodgers is able to bring Champions League football back to Celtic.

The Bhoys failed to qualify for Europe’s premier competition in either of Ronny Deila’s two seasons in charge at Parkhead.

One of Rodgers’ first tasks will be to improve Celtic’s performance in Europe, and Lennon is hoping that the Northern Irish boss is successful.

He said: “If Brendan can get Celtic into the Champions League again that’ll be tremendous. Or even if he can just have a good run in Europe it will create and interest in the game here. We have had that interest before but we’ve missed it over the last couple of years.”

Lennon delivered some of Celtic’s most famous European nights during his time in charge at Parkhead.

The Scottish boss, who has recently taken charge at Hibernian, managed to beat Barcelona in a match which will live long in the memory of all Celtic fans.

Deila, on the other hand, could not get his side to impress in non-domestic action.

Celtic failed to win a match in the group stage of the Europa League last term, and the Glasgow side’s poor performance in Europe eventually cost the Norwegian boss his job.

Rodgers is expected to take Celtic on to the next level, with the Bhoys due to play their first Champions League qualifier next month.
