Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has told the Liverpool Echo that he is expecting Loris Karius to challenge for a first team place at Liverpool.

The goalkeeper agreed a move to the club last month, becoming their first signing of the summer. The 22-year-old arrives at the club with big expectations on his shoulders, having impressed during his time with German side Mainz.

Reds fans in particular are expecting him to replace Simon Mignolet as the Reds number one, with the Belgian having once again struggled to impress last season, and Achterberg has backed him to challenge for a first team place next season.

“Loris is a good young 'keeper who will come in to compete and show what he’s about," he told the Liverpool Echo.

“He had an excellent season in Germany. I’ve watched him closely since 2014. Every club needs competition for places as that brings out the best in players. It’s normal in football for players to be fighting for places.”

It will certainly be interesting to see what decision Jurgen Klopp makes about the goalkeeping situation next season.

Mignolet has been the number one since arriving under Brendan Rodgers, but he has struggled to impress at Anfield.

Last season once again sawing him struggle for his best form at times, although they still opted to hand him a new five-year deal earlier this year.

That may have been to ensure they can get a good fee for him in future, and it would not be surprising to see Karius as first choice in the near future.
