Scoring goals and leadership seems integral to this summer's transfer plans.
Benitez is said to want a reliable goal-scorer and someone who can provide the side with leadership as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
They also say the Newcastle boss is going to be spearheading the recruitment drive this summer while working closely with managing director Lee Charnley.
Newcastle are certainly in need of someone to provide leadership given that there were several men taking over the captain's armband in Fabricio Coloccini, Jonjo Shelvey and Moussa Sissoko.
There were some performances prior to Benitez's arrival at the club during the last season which were indicative of a side that lacked leadership on the field.
Also any side that wins any league, regardless of the stature, needs someone who can reliably put the ball in the back of the net. There may have been some promising form from Aleksandar Mitrovic towards the end of the season under Benitez, but the Spaniard was reluctant to use him from the start in many matches, so a search for a new forward should perhaps come as little surprise.
There does seem to be an emphasis on reliability that is required from Benitez. It is what he wants from his players going into the next campaign. Putting the ball in the back of the net regularly and good characters in the dressing room are going to be integral to his side's chances of returning to the top flight.
