Could Ben Mansford help Leeds United beat Barnsley to Manchester United youngster Ashley Fletcher?

Leeds United's appointment of Ben Mansford as chief executive could prove to be a blow for former club Barnsley's chances of re-signing in demand star Ashley Fletcher.

Fletcher flourished at Oakwell on loan last season, scoring goals which helped Barnsley win promotion, including an early strike in the play-off final.

They are naturally keen to bring him back, but his situation is unclear, currently out of contract at Manchester United, but the Manchester Evening News report he has been offered a new deal.

A loan deal is an option for Barnsley if he renews at United, while it was reported earlier this month by the Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds United are keen.

Mansford is well aware of Fletcher from his time at Barnsley, and just last month spoke to the Barnsley Chronicle about the striker.

He said: "As for Ashley Fletcher, if Manchester United and his advisers are looking at the Championship as the next test for him and want to make sure he plays a lot of football then I would like to think we'd be a really good fit for him.

"However, I am not privy to what the other 23 Championship clubs are thinking and also Ashley wants to challenge for the Manchester United first team. His performances for us show that he has every right to think like that."

Mansford's comments indicate that he was worried other Championship teams would be able to match or better what Barnsley can offer financially, and now at Leeds, he may be in a better position to meet the striker's demands.

Leeds fans should also take positives that they have a chief executive who is well aware of the players at the club and their talents, and is not simply a  'bean counter' working in a management role.
