Manchester United are battling to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and his agent may hold an ace in the pack despite Borussia Dortmund's desire to make him see out his deal.

The BBC quote his agent Mino Raiola confirming United's interest and declaring that talks are on going.

Mkhitaryan's deal expires in June 2017 and Dortmund have stressed they would rather lose him on a free next year than sell him this summer.

He said: "It would be a sin to stop talking. I am a positive guy. If I wasn't confident of reaching some kind of conclusion, I wouldn't try."

"I am very proud Manchester United want him and the talks are being held in a good atmosphere, but at the moment Dortmund are still saying no."

There is one trick Raiola could try which could convince Dortmund that selling the Armenian international is their best option... threaten that he will join rivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer next summer.

Dortmund have lost several key players to Bayern in recent years, with Mario Gotze's release clause met three seasons ago.

They were also pressured to sell Mats Hummels to Bayern this past summer, while key striker Robert Lewandowski left on a free transfer in 2014.

Dortmund have got nowhere near challenging Bayern in recent seasons, and will not be able to if they keep losing key players to their rivals.

Mkhitaryan's departure looks inevitable one way or another, and if he and his agent can convince Dortmund they are serious about his joining Bayern, the fear factor of seeing him play for their rivals might just be enough to persuade them to cash in on United's offer.
