According to The Mirror, Southampton are looking into the possibility of appointing Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal - but The Sheffield Star believe he isn't under consideration.

The Saints lost manager Ronald Koeman to Everton last week after a protracted saga, and must now look to replace the Dutchman ahead of the new Premier League season.

A number of names have already been linked with moves to the South Coast, but a new manager has been added to the mix today.

The Mirror report that Southampton have shortlist Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal, after the Portuguese boss impressed in his first season at Hillsborough.

The 50-year-old, formerly of Maritimo, Sporting and Besiktas, was the shock appointment for Wednesday last summer, but he impressed by taking the Owls to the Championship play-off final, only to lose to Hull City.

Carvalhal will now be looking to mount another promotion push next season, but The Mirror believe that he's in contention for the Southampton job as they search for possible successors to Koeman.

However, there are conflicting reports emerging this evening. The Sheffield Star believe that The Mirror's report is off the mark, and Carvalhal isn't in the running and is likely to stay at Hillsborough - making this an intriguing situation to monitor.
