Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko was handed a start for France in their Euro 2016 game against Switzerland.

Sissoko's inclusion in the French squad was a little surprising considering his inconsistent displays for his club last season, who suffered relegation.

This was a big chance for the 26-year-old to put himself in the shop window, but he found it hard to shine in a tepid 0-0 draw, which saw both France and Switzerland qualify for the group stages.

His biggest moment was an excellent surging run down the right hand side late on, and a wonderful floated cross to Dimitri Payet, who volleyed against the crossbar.

Former Newcastle hero Alan Shearer was impressed with his contribution in that moment, telling BBC Sport's live post-game coverage:

"Sissoko was brilliant. Big and strong. He knocked them [his opponents] off down the right hand side."

He added: "I'd like to see more of that from Sissoko."

Fellow pundit Thierry Henry added, indicating he thought the midfielder played well: "We saw some games like that at Newcastle, but not enough."

Sissoko is thought to want a move away from Newcastle this summer, and while his performance was not a slam dunk to persuade clubs to pay up for him, he did not embarrass himself either, and his role at the tournament and increased profile will help his case.
