According to Tuttoermcatoweb, Middlesbrough have competition from Napoli to sign Marten De Roon.
The report claims that Boro are keen on signing the Atalanta midfielder this summer yet they aren’t the only team showing an interest as Italian duo Napoli and Lazio have also been linked.
Boro are looking to strengthen their squad this summer following their promotion to the Premier League.
One area which Aitor Karanka has identified as a possible weakness is in midfield where the Teesside club have few options should either Grant Leadbitter or Adam Clayton pick up a lengthy injury.
De Roon is predominantly a holding midfielder who excels in tackling and breaking up the play.
The 25-year-old was a key member of Atalanta’s squad this past season, making 36 Serie A appearances and averaging an impressive 3.4 tackles and 3.7 interceptions per league encounter.
Once on the books at Feyenoord as a youth player, De Roon had spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Heerenveen before moving to Italy with Atalanta only last summer.
The report mentions how Boro are not willing to let go in their bid to sign him, yet they must act quickly as both Lazio and Napoli are keen with the latter said to be considering a swift move.
De Roon has a contract with Atalanta until 2019, yet the Italian club face a struggle in holding on to him.
