Steven Pienaar has told South African news outlet IOL that he predicted his Everton exit before it happened.
Pienaar was released from Everton recently, but the experienced midfielder said that he was not shocked when told that he would be let go.
The South African international claims that he knew that the Toffees would not offer him a new deal six months ago, and he has been preparing to leave ever since.
“I knew from January what was going to happen [regarding my time at Everton],” Pienaar said.
“That’s why I haven’t complained. It wasn’t a surprise when I heard that they’re releasing me. I am not looking for much in my next club. I just want to play football.”
Pienaar is still looking for a new club since leaving Everton, but his future is undecided.
The attacking midfielder has had some interest from his homeland, but he may still be wanting to play in a more reputed league.
The 34-year-old struggled with injury in his last few seasons at Everton, but he still showed his class in patches.
Pienaar made just six appearances in all competitions for Everton last season, and he failed to score.
Pienaar ultimately spent four years at Everton, during his second stint at Goodison Park, and made 71 Premier League appearnaces.
