Manchester City hesitate over £65m Aubameyang fee, time for Arsenal to step up

After suffering a possible Jamie Vardy knockback, Arsenal should step up and try to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Manchester City have reportedly hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with The Mirror reporting they are hesitating over paying the £65 million Borussia Dortmund are demanding.

The investment required to sign Aubameyang is huge, but City's stance is potentially a mistake because the fee is not wholly unreasonable for the striker, who scored 36 goals in 45 games last season.

While City weigh up the move, the impasse should provide the ideal opportunity for Arsenal to stake their claim for the Gabon international - if they dare commit the money.

Arsenal's record signing was £42.5 million Mesut Ozil three seasons ago, and while Aubameyang would be a clear club record, when they bought the German, they smashed their previous highest spend by a lot too.

Last summer Arsenal bought just one senior player, paying £10 million to sign Petr Cech, and while they have since bought Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny for a combined £35 million, they should have plenty of money left in the coffers to splash out on a striker.

The Express report Arsene Wenger will buy only one or two more players this summer, stating that he believes three players is the 'maximum' for one window - having already added Xhaka.

And if they are limiting the number of bodies in, then they need to ensure the striker they do sign is of absolute top quality, a home run, and that is exactly Aubameyang.

The speedster would be incredible alongside Alexis Sanchez, and thrive playing alongside assist king Mesut Ozil.

City AM reported in December that Arsenal have overtaken Chelsea as London's richest club, and are the seventh richest in the world. They also earned more prize and television money than any other Premier League team last season.

Now they need to spend like the rich club they are, if they are going to win titles and accolades on the pitch. Aubameyang would be pricey, but money well spent.
