Former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Souness has included Payet among the outstanding midfielders in the tournament so far.

The former Newcastle United manager has also suggested that the West Ham star could be the player of the tournament.

“He has established himself quite late in the France team,” Souness wrote about Payet in The Times. “He has come in as a surprise package, but there has been a lot and we are not surprised at the kind of goals he scores.

“Payet is a potential player of the tournament because he is a matchwinner in a team that could go a long way.”
