However, a move to Liverpool would be a complicated one to complete.

River Plate president Rodolfo D’Onofriohas has confirmed that Liverpool are interested in right Gabriel Mercado, to Fox Sports via Sky Sports.

The Reds are expected to be busy this summer as Jurgen Klopp moulds the squad to better suit his needs.

The defence is likely to be chief among his thoughts given that area of the team has struggled for several years.

This week saw the Mirror claiming that the German was interested in right back Mercado after he has watched the River Plate man in action, as Argentina took on Chile in their opening game of the Copa America.

And it seems that interest is genuine, with D’Onofriohas confirming Liverpool are interested, although there is a major hitch in any potential deal because of the problem of getting a work permit.

“Klopp likes him," D’Onofriohas told Fox Sports, reported by Sky Sports.

"But for Mercado to go to England, Argentina need to be champions. Winning a title with the national team would allow him to play in England.”

It would certainly not be surprising to see Klopp making a move for Mercado this summer given his current options in defence.

With Kolo Toure leaving, and Martin Skrtel looking likely to join him, they will be short on options next season.

Mercado would be a smart signing then given his ability to play at both right back and centre back, although a move for him appears to be a complicated one to get over the line.
