Nice star Nampalys Mendy
The Hammers have already signed two players this summer, with both of them bargain free transfers, as Havard Nordtveit and Sofiane Feghouli have arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach and Valencia respectively.
With two signings and not a penny spent, West Ham now have money to spend elsewhere - and despite Nordtveit predominantly being a holding midfielder, Slaven Bilic's men appear to have targeted another midfield player.
L'Equipe report that the Hammers submitted a bid of €15m (£11.8m) to sign Nice star Nampalys Mendy - but he instead looks set to join Premier League rivals Leicester City.
Mendy, 23, has been a key player for Nice ever since joining the club from local rivals Monaco back in 2013, and his impressive performances appear to have caught the eye.
It's claimed that West Ham submitted a bid for Mendy this weekend, but the player's wish is to reunite with his former Monaco boss Claudio Ranieri at Leicester City - and he is expected in England on Monday to finalise his move to the King Power Stadium.
Ranieri in fact wanted Mendy last summer before the Foxes snapped up N'Golo Kante, and another move for the diminutive French midfielder makes perfect sense.
If Kante leaves the club this summer, they have a ready-made replacement for the heartbeat of their midfield. If Kante stays, they have a like-for-like backup in case Kante is injured or suspended, which is key as few players can replicate what Kante does for Leicester.
With a deal close, Mendy should soon be a Premier League - but it won't be with West Ham, who may now have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
Do you think Mendy will be a good signing for Leicester?
