The former Newcastle United target is now under consideration by Sam Allardyce, although no formal contact has been made with his club Wolfsburg

Sunderland are monitoring Bas Dost, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The imposing Dutch centre forward was wanted by Steve McClaren on Tyneside this time last year, however a move to St James’ Park never materialised.

However, Dost could still well be on his way to the North East of England, with the Black Cats also set to be keen on the Dutchman.

This is not the first time Sunderland themselves have been linked with the Wolfsburg forward, having expressed a similar interest in the summer of 2013.

Sunderland are currently in discussions with West Ham United over a possible move for Diafra Sakho, but Dost is seen as a potential alternative option.

Dost, now 27, made 22 appearances for Die Wolfe last season, scoring eight goals, which is eight fewer than the season before last.

However, with a record of 36 goals in 84 Bundesliga appearances spread over four seasons, Sam Allardyce has clearly seen enough in the striker to warrant consideration over a potential move.

The Dutchman, who has made six appearances for the national side after making his debut last year, stands at an impressive 6ft 5’, and is known for his finishing ability and aerial prowess, but also, surprisingly for someone of his height, his versatility.
