According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, West Ham United are cooling their interest in Alexandre Lacazette as they want to ensure Dimitri Payet remains their star man. But if that is true it is self-defeating.
At 29, Payet only has a few years left at the top of his game, and while there is no doubt he is a superb player where is the rule that says West Ham can have only one superstar?
The Hammers are on the verge of something great under manager Slaven Bilic and if they want to reach the next level they need to sign a quality striker to play ahead of Payet, not turn their back on one to ensure they keep the Frenchman happy.
The Mail report frankly makes no sense.
If West Ham have targets other than Lacazette, so be it. But it would be ludicrous for the club’s hierarchy to opt against signing a player of the Lyon forward’s quality to ‘protect Payet as the most important player at the club’ as the report states.
With the right additions this summer West Ham could reach the top four and from there the sky will be the limit in the years ahead.
With 23 goals last season and 31 the year before, the simple fact is Lacazette is a class act and was never going to come cheap.
West Ham are right not to be held to ransom but suggestions they are stepping away simply to keep Payet as the top banana is one of the silly season’s stupidest rumours to date.
