Sunderland's Lee Cattermole celebrates
Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has been linked with a controversial return to former club Middlesbrough, with The Mail reporting he could cost £5 million.
Cattermole began his career at Boro and was born in Stockon-on-Tees, before leaving for Wigan Athletic in 2008.
Three years later he returned to the north east to sign with Sunderland, where he has remained a key part of their side under successive managers.
Sunderland's Lee Cattermole in action
Cattermole defines the phrase 'combative' and is known for getting stuck in, often too much, regularly picking up bookings and prone to red cards.
An England youth international in his Middlesbrough days, he has not managed a senior call up during his career so far.
Middlesbrough are back in the Premier League after winning promotion last season, and could seek to reunite him with his former teammate Stewart Downing who they re-signed last year.

Opinion on the rumours is certainly split, with Sunderland fans divided over whether they would allow him to leave...
As for #SAFC, wouldn't sell Cattermole. Love him to bits & does have quality about him. Sell Bridcutt, Larsson, Gomez, Buckley etc.— Michael Bowers (@MichaelBowers15) June 17, 2016
Looks like the Boro fans don't want Cattermole. If we can sign M'villa I'd let him go.— Stephen Blacklock (@TheStevieB1) June 17, 2016
Cattermole's gannin nowhere... Ive decided— Matthew Potts (@Pottsy147) June 17, 2016

Middlesbrough supporters are even less enthusiastic about a transfer, and also took to Twitter to comment...
I hope the links with Cattermole are not true! We want new exciting players not trips down memory lane! Catts is too much trouble!— Lisa Rushby (@lisaboro) June 17, 2016
I think cattermole link is from a Gibson quote a few weeks ago saying he regretted selling him. Someone adding 2 & 2 together & getting 5— David Gibb (@davidgibb45) June 17, 2016
Not Cattermole— Barry Cellnet (@BarryCellnet) June 17, 2016
Clayton, Forshaw and Leads (less so) might not have the Premier League experience of Cattermole but I'd still rather have those 3 #Boro— Jonny McKinley (@boro_jonny) June 17, 2016
Waking up absolutely buzzing from yesterday, now I hear news back home that we want to sign cattermole, don't think I like that you know— Michael Long (@MJLongy89) June 17, 2016
No, don't want cattermole back. Why do we want to bring ex players in when we could possibly get better?— Kate (@katepearce12) June 17, 2016
Lee Cattermole is better than Grant Leadbitter so I would be happy for us to sign him. #UTB— Jay (@sugarjaymate) June 17, 2016
If Boro sign Cattermole he is 110% not Aitor Karanka's signing! Wish he was left to sign who he wanted and not who the hierarchy want.— Hannah Mahon (@HannahMahon) June 17, 2016
