Joey Barton said at half-time in the England game that the match was crying out for West Ham's Andy Carroll.

After Gareth Bale put Wales 1-0 up against England in their Euro 2016 clash on Thursday, Twitter was not a calm place.

You knew it had reached full scale panic mode among Three Lions fans when Joey Barton began banging the drum for this man... Andy Carroll.

Barton began bemoaning the fact Andy Carroll was not in England's squad, insisting it was an ideal time to use him.

England boss Roy Hodgson was spoilt for choice with his Euro 2016 squad, and Carroll was never a serious contender, despite his hat-trick against Arsenal late in the season.

Jermain Defoe was also in the mix, and Carroll may only have been England's seventh choice striker - at best.

Hodgson did make changes to the England side and was repaid when both Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge netted to give England a 2-1 win.

Sturridge's goal was a result of patient and intricate passing which cut open Wales' defence, and was reward for a dominant second half performance by England.

Whether they would have managed to turn it around by lumping it up to Carroll we will never know, but so far England have shown they are just fine without him.

Barton wasn't happy with the performance though, commenting on Twitter at full-time.
