But new Rovers boss Owen Coyle has won the day and persuaded Stokes to make the move to Ewood Park.

Stokes arrived in Lancashire on Friday morning for his medical, ahead of signing on the dotted line with Blackburn.

HITC Sport understands that Stokes has agreed a three-year deal with Blackburn and the move will see him return to play in English football for the first time since he left Sunderland for Hibernian in 2009.
