Aitor Karanka has told Middlesbrough’s club website that he is ‘really pleased’ with the signing of Sporting Gijon defender Bernardo Espinosa.

The deal was confirmed by the club on Wednesday, and it will see the Colombian centre-half join the club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Guillem Balague recently praised the qualities of the Gijon defender, who helped guide his side to safety in La Liga after winning promotion with the Asturian club the season before last.

Balague described Espinosa as “leader, hard worker, great in the air, dangerous in set pieces, not scare of the physical battle” on twitter.

And Karanka has echoed that sentiment, expressing his delight at securing the deal for the 28 year old.

“I’m really pleased,” said Karanka. “We have signed a really good player.

“We’ve followed him for the last two years and he will be a good player for us in this league because he’s a strong central defender.

“Like the other players before him, he is also a really good lad.”

Middlesbrough won promotion back to the Premier League last season whilst conceding just 31 goals, the lowest in the entire division.

And Espinosa will be hoping he can bolster their resolute defence when the club makes the step up to the Premier League.

The Colombian is Boro’s second signing of this transfer window, having already secured the signing of Ajax’s Viktor Fischer.
