Former Spurs hero Chris Waddle has spoken of his confusion over Harry Kane’s set-piece responsibilities for England, in quotes published by The Sun.

The Tottenham striker began taking corners and free-kicks in the run up to the Euros and continued that in the Three Lions’ opening round draw with Russia on Saturday.

“I can’t understand how Adam Lallana can’t take a corner, he’s two-footed,” said Waddle. “Unless they’re looking for a certain delivery which players sometimes can’t do.

“It surprises me that Harry Kane takes them. I don’t think his corners were great. He had one decent one and the rest were over-hit.”

Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela divide set-piece duties at Tottenham which leaves Kane in the box with the task of finding the net - something he has done effectively over the last two seasons – and Waddle feels that should also be the case with England.

“Normally you have your centre-forward in the box. With his height, his goalscoring record and his awareness in the box he’d be better off there,” he added.

Kane has failed to set the world alight in his last few England appearances, leading to calls from some quarters for him to be dropped from the starting line-up against Wales.

The 22-year old has played a tremendous amount of football since his emergence just over two years ago and his exertions may finally have caught up with him.

Roy Hodgson now faces the difficult decision of whether to drop the Premier League’s top goalscorer in order to inject some fresh impetus into his England side.
