Chancel Mbemba has told Newcastle United’s official site that his first season at St. James’ Park was fantastic.
Newcastle signed Mbemba from Anderlecht last summer, and he went on to play a key role for the North East club.
Mbemba played 33 times for Newcastle in the Premier League, and he impressed with his performances in the heart of the North East side’s defence.
The 21-year-old centre-back was unable to stop Newcastle from being relegated, but he says that he still enjoyed his first taste of English football.
"I played a lot of games last season,” Mbemba said. “It was my first season here and I played 30-something games and that was really fantastic for me.”
Mbemba looks likely to remain with Newcastle, as they aim to win an immediate promotion back to the top tier.
The Magpies are the favourites to win the Championship next season, following Rafael Benitez’s agreement to stay on.
Benitez has committed his future to Newcastle for the coming years, and Mbemba is delighted to continue working with the Spanish boss.
"On a personal note, it's really good to have worked with him. I've worked with a lot of coaches over the last few years, and Rafa is one of the best," Mbemba said.
"He's absolutely fantastic. He's a Champions League winner, he's managed Real Madrid, he's managed Liverpool and personally, I think he's really helped me improve as a player.”
Mbemba is likely to have added competition for places at Newcastle next season, as Benitez is aiming to strengthen Newcastle’s defence in the summer transfer window.
