Why Manchester United's reported interest in Mkhitaryan would be great business, if they can get it done

One Borussia Dortmund player has already joined Manchester City this summer, could another star be heading to Manchester?

Manchester United are reportedly seeking to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with the Armenian star eager to join according to comments from his agent in Bild, despite Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke's desire to stop a transfer from happening.

Though Bayern Munich have been the regular fox in the night coming into the Dortmund henhouse to steal their prize players over the past few seasons, it appears the city of Manchester is fully committed to providing a couple more sides looking to convince Westfalenstadion stars to depart for pastures new.

With Manchester City having already recruited central midfielder Ilkay Gundogan for a fee of around £20 million, according to BBC Sport, it is now Manchester United's turn to get in on what looks like being a summer of big name departures at Dortmund, as they push to sign Mkhitaryan. And the Red Devils may well be getting the more influential member of Thomas Tuchel's midfield if they are successful.

Mkhitaryan had a sensational season for Dortmund last year, with an astonishing 23 goals and 32 assists in 52 matches. It was a massive step up in performances from his seasons under Jurgen Klopp and proof that he is likely one of the best attacking midfielders on the planet right now.

Though Watzke's comments appear to suggest a move will be difficult for United, or any club, to negotiate, it will surely depend on how much Jose Mourinho wants the 27-year-old for his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Gundogan's input to Dortmund is generally less focused on goals and assists, being a key member of the engine room. He scored just three times, and provided seven assists for his side in 40 matches, and he has never scored more than four times a season for Dortmund, but he is a major player in his club's attacks, often playing the assist to the assist that breaks defences.

However, the German international has had injury problems in the past, missing almost the entire 2013-14 season and the World Cup with a back problem, while a knee injury has ruled him out of the Euros this summer.

Though Gundogan could yet turn out to be a stellar signing for the Citizens, especially with the existing attacking midfielders they already have at their disposal, United capturing Mkhitaryan may be a bigger loss to Dortmund and one of the standout deals of the entire summer.

Unless of course, rumours from the likes of the Manchester Evening News regarding another Dortmund star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, firm up.
