Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has told a Leeds United fan that he believes Steve Evans would have got the club promoted if he stayed.

MacAnthony is pals with Evans, who was let go by Leeds after less than a season in charge, with club owner Massimo Cellino deciding not to offer him a contract extension.

Leeds decided to replace Evans with former Swansea City boss Garry Monk, and while MacAnthony says he wishes him luck, he is unconvinced and believes his predecessor would have been a better bet.

Evans was left in limbo for several weeks as Massimo Cellino weighed up his next move, and is currently looking for a new job, ideally in the Championship.

Leeds new boss Garry Monk has plenty to prove, with only one managerial spell under his belt at Swansea City, a club where he was already familiar with all aspects of it, having played there as a player.

Now in Yorkshire he faces a different challenge, but knows what it takes to earn promotion, having helped the Swans up through the play-offs during his playing career.
