After an outpouring of tributes from supporters, touched by Riise's memorable career, he responded with an emotional series of tweets, and pledged to carry on representing Liverpool in his post playing days.

Riise made more than  300 appearances for the Reds between 2001 and 2008 before leaving for Roma. He later returned to the Premier League for a relatively successful spell with Fulham.

He also amassed 110 international caps for Norway, although only had the opportunity to represent them at one international tournament for which they qualified, at Euro 2000.
