Rangers won the Scottish Championship title this past season with ease and got automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership for the 2016-17 campaign.
The Gers have already started preparing for next season, signing former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton in the summer transfer window.
Former Celtic striker McAvennie believes that Rangers are not yet in a position to challenge the Bhoys for the league title.
“You also have Aberdeen and Hearts signing players and selling a lot of season tickets,” McAvennie told The Scottish Sun. “So everyone in Scottish football is raising their game.
“Personally, I don’t think Rangers are in a position to challenge Celtic just yet. Warburton will add more players but so will Rodgers.”
Celtic will start the 2016-17 campaign as favourites for the Scottish Premiership title.
With Brendan Rodgers in charge of the first team, the fans are very confident and are looking forward to an exciting season.
Rangers do have a good squad, but manager Mark Warburton does need to add a few more players in order to push the Bhoys.
The signing of former Manchester City midfielder Barton on a free transfer is certainly going to help the Gers’ quest to have a successful 2016-17 Scottish Premiership campaign.
