Aston Villa fans have largely been sympathetic with Ciaran Clark after he scored in own goal in the Republic of Ireland’s match against Sweden.
Ireland had looked to be on their way to victory against the Swedes yesterday, but Clark diverted Zlatan Ibrahimovic's cross into his own-goal in the second-half to put the score levels.
Up until that point Clark had put in a good performance, but Villa fans suggested that it was not too much of a surprise to see the central-defender make a mistake.
Clark is a whole hearted guy and that's better than most at #avfc but he always has a mistake in him. Championship level perfect for him.— Villa Views (@ViewsVilla) June 13, 2016
What's that? Ciaran Clark own goal? No way! Never expected that. #avfc— Matt Lynch (@mattlyynch) June 13, 2016
Never thought I'd say this but Ciaran Clark has Ibrahimovic in his back pocket at the moment! #AVFC— Heart Of The Holte (@HeartOfTheHolte) June 13, 2016
That is exactly the problem with Ciaran Clark. Every game he plays well for 99% of the time before the one costly mistake every time. #avfc— Andy_avfc (@Andy__avfc) June 13, 2016
Ireland may not have beaten Sweden, but their performance in the first hour of the match was impressive.
Before taking the lead through Wes Hoolahan, Ireland had dominated, but Sweden responded well to going behind.
Erik Hamren’s side began to exert some pressure on Ireland after being put on the backfoot, and Clark’s own goal was reward for their intent.
Ireland now have games against Italy and Belgium left to play in their Euro 2016 group, and they are likely to need to pick up at least one victory to make it through to the knockout stages.
