According to a recent report from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal have joined the list of clubs interested in signing Lyon centre-back Samuel Umtiti this summer.

While it would take a hefty bid to tempt the Ligue 1 club into doing business, with Umtiti having a contract in France until the summer of 2019, the 22-year-old is exactly what the Gunners need as they attempt to build a squad that will reclaim the Premier League title after too long away from the top table.

Last season proved that Per Mertesacker’s dwindling powers are not enough against anyone but the slowest of opponents while Gabriel Paulista took a big step back after initially impressing following his move to the Emirates Stadium.

With Laurent Koscielny the only Arsenal centre-back who can be trusted to perform week in, week out, it is time manager Arsene Wenger brought in a player who can develop an effective partnership alongside the Frenchman.

Umtiti would be that player and Arsenal really should do everything in their power to secure his signature this summer ahead of alleged suitors including Barcelona.

His age means he is only going to improve in the years ahead, and when you consider how good he already is that is an exciting prospect for his next club and a scary one for his future opponents.

With 170 appearances for Lyon under his belt to date, the France under-21 international has plenty of experience and he could become a fan favourite in North London if Wenger took a punt.

For all the money spent on the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, it is time to splash the cash at the opposite end of the field, because Koscielny and Petr Cech cannot do it all on their own.
