Rangers midfielder Joey Barton suggested on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11) that Aston Villa will not bounce straight back into the Premier League.
Villa got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and will play in the Championship next season.
The Villans are one of the biggest clubs of England, and many will back them to finish in the top two of the Championship next season and get automatic promotion back to the top flight of English football.
Former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton, who recently joined Scottish Premiership side Rangers on a free transfer, has predicted that the Villans will remain in the Championship for the 2017-18 campaign.
“I just don’t see it,” said Barton on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11) when asked if Villa can bounce back to the Premier League straightaway.
“I just think they are in turmoil. I don’t think they have got the players for it. I don’t think they have got people with the right attitude.
“I don’t think they have got the core group that’s going to stick together. Hopefully they do because it’s a huge club, Aston Villa.”
Villa have recently appointed Roberto Di Matteo as their manager, and the fans should be optimistic.
The former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion boss is a good manager, and hopefully he will be backed by the club in the summer transfer window.
A top-two finish in the Championship next season will be very difficult for the Villans, but they should fancy their chances of clinching a playoff spot.
