Rangers midfielder Joey Barton revealed on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11) that he was shocked with Dimitri Payet’s goal for France last week.
Payet was the star of the show for France against Romania in their opening Euro 2016 game on Friday evening.
The West Ham attacking midfielder provided the assisted for France’s opening goal of the match and scored the winner late on with a stunning strike.
Former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton, who recently joined Glasgow giants Rangers on a free transfer, was stunned with the way Payet scored the winner for France.
“I have seen him bang them in with his right foot, we have all seen them in the Premier League this year, but the thing that shocked me was how clean he struck it with his weak foot,” said Barton on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11).
“It was a hell of a strike to get that dip on it, especially with what’s considered your weak foot.”
Payet was one of the best players in the Premier League this past season, and it seems that he has simply carried that form into the European Championship in his home country of France.
The former Marseille star scored nine goals and created 116 chances in 30 Premier League appearances for West Ham during the 2015-16 campaign.
Against Romania on Friday evening, the Frenchman attempted five dribbles and created eight chances.
