Rangers midfielder Joey Barton offered his opinion on Everton defender John Stones reportedly turning down Barcelona on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11).
According to a recent report in The Daily Mail, Stones has turned down the chance to join Spanish and European giants Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
It has been reported that Barcelona believe that the England international central defender wants to move to Manchester City this summer and work with new manager Pep Guardiola.
Former Newcastle United and Queens Park Ranger midfielder Barton, who recently joined Scottish Premiership-bound Rangers on a free transfer, has offered his thoughts on Stones’s reported decision to snub Barcelona.
“If you get the opportunity to go to Barcelona, I think as a modern-day player, as Gareth Bale has proven, you have to have a go at that,” said Barton on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11).
Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and it must be an honour for footballers to play alongside the likes of Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.
Stones’s reported decision not to join Barcelona is quite an interesting one. Perhaps the 22-year-old, who can also play as a right-back, wants to stay in England and improve his game further.
It could prove to be a bad decision from Stones, as Barcelona may not come calling again and could sign an ever better defender this summer or the next.
