Wales claimed a 2-1 victory over Slovakia in their opening group game at the European Championships on Saturday through goals from Gareth Bale and Hal Robson-Kanu and the result certainly puts the Dragons in good stead to progress into the first knockout round of the competition.
Understandably, Wales had to dig in very deep in order to claim the three points on the day and Slovakia certainly did not make things easy by adopting a very aggressive approach during the clash.
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel in particular was guilty of making a number of unsavoury challenges throughout the game and was very lucky to remain on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes.
Among Skrtel’s numerous offences, his elbow on Jonny Williams in the first half was noteworthy and to the surprise of many the 31-year-old was not even booked for his troubles.
Few were impressed with Skrtel’s actions and Robert Snodgrass and John Arne Riise were among the many who took to Twitter to slam the defender for his elbow on Williams.

Where is the ref on that?? Clear penalty!!! Elbow right in his face!! Lucky lucky Skrtel— John Arne Riise (@JARiiseOfficial) June 11, 2016

Martin Skrtel should've been sent off in the first half for his elbow on Jonathan Williams— Matthew (@carrick_fan) June 11, 2016
Great start for Wales. Skrtel lucky not to be banned tho half wonder if Uefa will look at elbow if officials say they didn't see it— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) June 11, 2016
Shocking to see that elbow from Skrtel. Not the type of player that does that sort of thing. pic.twitter.com/s89dClPw59— Thomas (@ManLikeMata) June 11, 2016
Good opening 45 from #WAL who lead 1-0. Martin Skrtel lucky to have got away with an elbow.— Anfield Online (@anfieldonline) June 11, 2016
Textbook Martin Skrtel elbow in the box. Referee with the magic wand behind the goal decides he'd rather remain doing nothing for his money— SportsJOE.ie (@SportsJOEdotie) June 11, 2016
What is the point of a 4th official if they miss blatant fouls like that Skrtel elbow on Jonny Williams?!— James Truscott (@ohnoitstruscott) June 11, 2016
That official behind the line is literally 2 meters away and doesn't see Skrtel elbow someone, what do they get paid for— Bav Sanghera (@Bavvy95) June 11, 2016
If you're going to have these extra officials behind the goal, then they must do there job! Blatant elbow from Skrtel— Jay Sadler (@Sadler004) June 11, 2016
Another awful refereeing decision as Skrtel nearly takes Jonny Williams's head off with his elbow. Should have been a penalty and red card.— Jonathan O'Brien (@obrien_jonathan) June 11, 2016
