Payet was named as a starter in the hosts' opening game against Romania on Friday as Didier Deschamps’ side looked to secure a strong start to the tournament.
They did just that, courtesy of the brilliance of Payet, who provided the assist for Olivier Giroud’s opening goal and scored a superb strike of his own to seal a 2-1 win.
Payet's all round display was an impressive one to say the least, although it was of no surprise to Premier League fans who had seen him star in his first season in England.
West Ham in particular will not have been shocked to see him do so well, and his teammate Ogbonna is one such person.
“Payet's goal did not come as a surprise for me,” the London Evening Standard reports him saying.
“Every day in training I get to see the skills he showed. He's a great player, very skilful. I'm very happy he showed how good he is while playing for the national team.”
Payet will now be keen to build on that superb display against Romania to ensure France progress from their group.
The pressure is very much on them this summer, with many expecting a strong French side to go far in the tournament.
If they are to do that, they will need their star men at their best and Payet has certainly shown he has every intention of firing on all cylinders.
