The 31-year-old put his recent struggles at Villa behind him on Saturday night by producing a superb performance to help the US secure a 1-0 win and progress to the quarter-finals of the Copa America Centenario.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan reminded everyone of his shot-stopping ability on Saturday night, putting in a superb performance to help the US national team beat Paraguay 1-0 in their third and final group game of the Copa America Centenario in Philadelphia.

Clint Dempsey gave the US the lead shortly before the half-hour with his 51st international goal after Gyasi Zardes found him in the area with a low cross, but the hosts suffered a setback just after half-time when DeAndre Yedlin was sent off after picking up two bookings in quick succession.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s side managed to hold on for the rest of the match, however, to secure their place in the quarter-final stage as Group A winners after Colombia’s 3-2 defeat to Costa Rica meant they slipped to second on goal difference.

Aside from centre-back John Brooks, Guzan was the USA’s star man on the night, making six big stops – including a fantastic double-save in the 82nd-minute – to help keep Paraguay at bay and preserve the clean sheet.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s decision to name the Villa keeper as the team’s starter over Tim Howard before the tournament was met by widespread disapproval due to his on-going struggles at the club level, but he has so far kept his critics quiet with a series of confident displays.

Here’s how some of the US fans and media members reacted on Twitter to the 31-year-old’s latest outing – one which may well make new Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo think twice before searching for a new No. 1 this summer.
