The Equatorial Guinea international was seemingly on his way to Spurs.
Francesco Totti and Pepin
The player in question is Jose Ndong Machin Dicombo, who more commonly goes by the name Pepin.
The 19-year-old joined Roma from Malaga last summer and has previously been in the youth academy at Barcelona.
His agent Nunzio Marchione spoke to Inside Roma this weekend and admitted that he would have headed to Spurs, were it not for the direct involvement of Roma director Walter Sabatini:
“The credit goes to Walter Sabatini. He followed, loved, then at the time when you could sign Machin on a free transfer because of the expired contract with Malaga captured the moment.
“I'll let you know a backstory, about it. If Sabatini had not included Roma in time for Machin, Tottenham had virtually taken him, it was in their hands. But Sabatini raised and made sure of the player."
Pepin has not yet played for the Roma first-team since making his move, so Spurs fans might wonder what all the fuss is about.
But he has impressed in the Primavera squad and looks like a potential future star.
Pepin is a technically gifted central midfielder who in fact has played twice for the Equatorial Guinea national team.
Spurs have brought in plenty of top young talent over the years and given the opportunities manager Mauricio Pochettino hands to the younger players at the club Pepin might have done well at Spurs.
But it seems he will be hoping to force his way into the Roma first-team picture in the 2016-17 campaign.
