France's Dimitri Payet celebrates after the game
West Ham United trio Mark Noble, Cheikhou Kouyate and Toni Martinez all took to social networking site Twitter in order to praise club team-mate Dimitri Payet on his international display.
The former Marseille man was the cream of the crop for France on Friday night as he pulled the strings in midfield and scored a wonderful winner as the hosts downed Romania 2-1 in Paris.
It looked for a while that the game was heading for a 1-1 draw after Romania cancelled out Olivier Giroud’s opener via a penalty, yet Payet popped up with one of those memorable goals yet again.
In the 89th minute, the Hammers’ ace picked up the ball just outside the area, turned inside onto his left foot and rifled an unstoppable drive into the top corner, prompting incredible scenes in Paris.
Payet has scored some belters for West Ham over the past 12 months, and his finish seemed to mark a culmination of a year’s hard work and a personal dream for the player as the emotion got the better of him.
As the playmaker was substituted to a standing ovation a minute later, the 29-year-old was sobbing on his way off the field as he knew how big of a moment it was for both him and France.
Payet has the ability to go on and become a huge player for Didier Deschamp’s side over the next few weeks, and beyond that he could be the catalyst to help fire West Ham into the top four next season.
