Michael Owen suggests that the Everton defender makes fewer mistakes than Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Manchester United’s Chris Smalling.

England's John Stones

Former Manchester United and Liverpool striker Michael Owen has suggested on Colossusbets.com that Everton defender John Stones does not make as many mistakes as he is claimed to be.

Stones is one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and can play as a centre-back or as a right-back.

The 22-year-old, who is very comfortable on the ball and is brilliant technically, is part of the 23-man England squad for the Euro 2016 finals in France this month.

The former Barnsley defender did not have a great 2015-16 campaign and was criticised by many for apparently making too many mistakes.

Former Newcastle striker Owen believes that the perception that Stones commits more errors than others is wrong.

The former Real Madrid striker has claimed that Stones’s England international teammates, centre-back Gary Cahill of Chelsea and Manchester United central defender Chris Smalling, make more mistakes.

“As I said, everyone makes mistakes,” Owen wrote about Stones on Colossusbets.com. “But it’s a lazy throwaway line to keep saying he makes too many errors. How many has he made this season? I bet nobody could think of three.

“Well, I can think of six that Smalling has made and even more from Cahill. But just because you make the odd mistake – and you make more when you try things – does not make any of that trio bad players.”

Stones is hugely talented and has potential, but he is still very young and is learning.

Perhaps the Everton defender’s critics should allow the youngster some time to get everything right, and fans must have patience with him.
