West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet has taken to social networking site Twitter to express his delight at France’s win against Romania on Friday evening.
Payet was the star for hosts France, who won their opening game of the Euro 2016 finals 2-1 against Romania at Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
After a goalless first half, the home team took the lead on 57 minutes when Olivier Giroud turned in a delivery from the West Ham midfielder.
Bogdan Stancu pulled Romania level from the penalty spot on 65 minutes, but Payet made it 2-1 to the French with a stunning strike on 89 minutes.
The 2-1 win in their opening Group A game means that France have a great chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
Payet has taken to Twitter to revel in France’s win, and so have his international teammates, Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny and Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who wrote, "1st match, 1st victory. Hoping that there will be others with @equipedefrance.”
Against Romania on Friday evening, Payet attempted five dribbles and created eight chances.
The 29-year-old former Marseille star was the best player on the pitch, and his performance underlines just how important he is to the current France team.
