France's Olivier Giroud
France hosted Romania on Friday evening in the opening game of Euro 2016, starting the tournament with a 2-1 win.
It was not a comfortable evening for the hosts though, as they needed a super strike from West Ham United star Dimitri Payet to seal the victory.
Before then, they had struggled to carve out clear-cut chances as the Romanian’s sat deep and frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side. One man who struggled was Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, who despite grabbing the opening goal of the game, endured a tough evening in general.
And speaking after the game, Shearer says the Gunners star will have been relieved that Payet’s stunner secured an opening game win.
“He had chances and he’ll be one relieved man,” he told Match of the Day.
“But to his credit he kept getting in there and didn’t shy away from it and he got the goal. He’s played his part in a big win.”

It will now be interesting to see if the goal gives Giroud the confidence to go on and be a force in this summer’s tournament.
He is very much under pressure in this French side, with fans already showing their displeasure at his inclusion in the current squad.
If he can enjoy a strong tournament though, and add to his goal in the opening game, then those boo boys will likely be silenced quickly.
