“If you look at the forward line, everyone was efficient in our win over Scotland on Saturday, so it will be the coach to choose his team to face Romania. It is better to have these choices than to have no options.”

Payet will be in direct competition for a starting berth with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial and Kingsley Coman. One thing that the former Marseille man does possess, however, that separates him from pretty much everybody else in world football, is his free-kick taking ability. This could be a deciding factor when Didier Deschamps decides on his starting XI, and Payet is well aware of this:

“This is an important weapon, as there will be close games and set pieces can unlock situations.”

The Hammers favourite also highlighted how he is at his best for his national team when he receives the ball deeper, and is able to combine with Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi:

“I was involved in the play a lot against Scotland, and that allows me to be at the beginning of the attacks. I can link-up with midfielders Paul and Blaise in particular, and we made good combinations.”

France are 3/1 tournament favourites with Payet a 25/1 outsider to win the player of the tournament award.
