Speaking to talkSPORT, former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has warned Arsenal fans that they have not signed a top player in Granit Xhaka.

The midfielder became the club’s first signing of the summer, with them paying a reported £30million plus fee for his services.

His capture has largely been welcomed, with hopes he will be the imposing central midfielder that their side have been missing since the departure of Patrick Vieira.

Former Swiss international Henchoz has warned Arsenal though saying that they have not signed a top player in his compatriot, and he will need to up his game in the Premier League.

“He is a good player but I don’t think he is a top player yet,” he told talkSPORT.

“He can improve with his move to Arsenal, but he will have to step up his game. For Arsenal fans, they can look forward to Xhaka in the team, but he will have to step up his game.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how Xhaka fits into the Arsenal line up next season.

His big price tag suggests he will be a starter in Arsene Wenger’s team, but who he replaces in the line up poses an intriguing dilemma for the Frenchman.

The man likely to drop out is January signing Mohamed Elneny, but he would be unfortunate to miss out given the fine displays he has put in since his arrival at the Emirates.
