Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that Newcastle United fans have been amazing with him since he moved to St. James’ Park.
Despite Newcastle being relegated, the Magpies fan base were united behind Benitez.
Newcastle supporters urged Benitez to stay, and they got their wish, when the Spanish boss wavered the release clause in his contract after they were relegated from the Premier League.
And Benitez said: “It was incredible to experience it and to feel the love they have for the club and the welcome and support they gave me and the team.
“They did not have an easy season but they are always supporting.
“It was very emotional for me.
“The fans make a very big difference - to me, to the team on the pitch, to the whole city.
“They have been amazing, really amazing.”
Benitez was handed 10 games to save Newcastle last season, and he sparked a major improvement in the Tynesiders’ form.
However, the former Real Madrid boss’s appointment ended up being too little too late.
Newcastle won their last match of the season 5-1 against Tottenham Hotspur, but by that time their relegation had been confirmed.
Newcastle are currently the favourites to win next season’s Championship, and they are likely to hand Benitez a sizeable amount of funds to ensure that they live up to expectations.
