This week saw Arsenal legend Robert Pires, quoted by the London Evening Standard, saying that West Ham star Dimitri Payet should start ahead of Manchester United’s Anthony Martial for France.

Both are in the France squad for Euro 2016 this summer as the hosts look to win on home soil. They each enjoyed strong first season’s in the Premier League last year after moving from Ligue 1 in the summer transfer window.

In the France team they are competing for a place on the left of a forward line that boasts talent such as Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman and Olivier Giroud.

But how did the two sides compare in the Premier League this past season? We decided to find out.

Anthony Martial Man Utd 11 0.81 4 1.16 22.81 2.71 51.06 2.35 31

And it was a win for the West Ham United man as he came out on top in five of the eight areas we looked at.

On a per game basis he managed more shots on target, more key passes, more accurate passes, as well as more touches and fewer unsuccessful touches.

He also came out on top in terms of assists, managing three times as many as the United man with a score of 12 to four.

It wasn’t all bad news for Martial though as he managed more goals across the campaign and was superior when it came to dribbling also.

A win for Payet though and perhaps Didier Deschamps should take a look at these stats when picking his starting eleven for Euro 2016.
