France fans against Romania Euro 96
As France and Romania prepare to open up Euro 2016, it's worth remembering they kicked off their Euro 96 campaign on the same day 20 years ago against each other.
St James's Park was the setting as France were the victors thanks to Christophe Dugarry capitalising on a mix-up in the Romania defence to give Aimé Jacquet's side the perfect start to the tournament.
France would end up finishing top of Group B with seven points as they also faced Spain and Bulgaria, and would progress all the way to the semi-finals.

In the quarter-finals, they took on the Netherlands at Anfield, but would need the lottery of penalties for them to make it to the last four, but they would end up on the wrong side of the shoot-out against Czech Republic at Old Trafford.
Tonight, France will be hoping to get a win, like they did 20 years ago, in order for them to have the best possible start as the home nation. They will be hoping to generate the kind of momentum that could see them go all the way like they did in 1984 - the last time they hosted the competition.
They will fancy their chances as well with a side blessed with talent in the form of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Antoine Griezmann just to name a few.
Romania, however, will be out to prove a point against the hosts and ensure they spoil their start to the campaign.
