Glasgow Rangers fans have expressed disappointment over Dean Shiels’ departure from Ibrox on social media site Twitter.
Mark Warburton chose not to offer the midfielder a new contract at Rangers, and his departure was announced earlier today.
Shiels had been with Rangers for four years, and although he was not a permanent starter last season, he did play a role in helping them get promoted.
Shiels made 87 appearances in total for Rangers, and he is well regarded by supporters of the Glasgow club - as shown by the reaction to his departure on Twitter.
He joined our mission to climb the divisions from the bottom and for that I thank you— Gareth White (@RFCGW) June 10, 2016
Give his all for us
Thank you Dean Shiels #WATP

Didn't see that coming for Dean Shiels. Hard worker when he came on and happy to be a sub. Must be freeing up wages— JohnJo McBean (@JohnJo67) June 10, 2016
Was never his biggest fan but all the best Dean Shiels. Definetly played a part this season and can leave with head held high— Scott Paterson (@Paterson1872) June 10, 2016
Hope Dean Shiels has a nice ending to his career. Top lad, heart in the right place, always gave it his all when needed. Good luck to him!— Damian B (@Rangers_Bud) June 10, 2016
Dean Shiels being released is 100% the correct decision. Just as it was with Clark, Law & Templeton.— The Only Team For Me (@raebykcalb) June 10, 2016
Thanks for your efforts.
Sad to see Dean Shiels leave, always thought he was a good when he played. Wish him well for the future.— David (@DWL90) June 10, 2016
All the best Dean Shiels and thanks for the effort but it's good to see our manager getting rid of the deadwood, he ain't messing about !— Mark (@MarkK1872) June 10, 2016
Shiels now becomes a free agent, and he is likely to have plenty of suitors this summer.
The 31-year-old’s exit from Rangers does free up some wages, which Warburton is likely to spend over the summer.
Rangers have already brought in four new players since their promotion to the Scottish Premiership was confirmed and more are expected to follow.
Niko Kranjcar is the latest man to be linked with a move to Rangers, with the Croatian expected to sign a two-year-deal at Ibrox in the near future.
