Quoted by the Daily Star, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has blasted England after reports suggesting John Stones won’t start at Euro 2016.

England manager Roy Hodgson is yet to decide upon his central defensive partnership for the tournament with Stones one of his options.

However, reports this week suggested that the Everton man is set to miss out and Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling will be the central defensive pick.

That would cap a disappointing end to a disappointing season for the Blues defender, who came in for criticism across the campaign.

And Murphy has blasted the decision, saying it is a travesty that Stones is not going to play.

"I think he's a wonderful player. It is a travesty that he is not going to play. He’ll end up in the team for sure,” the Daily Star reports him saying.

“From the squad he's [Hodgson] picked I can only see one successful line-up, and that's five at the back with (John) Stones in the middle, but then if any defenders get injured you've got no real cover.”

If Stones does end up missing out on a starting place this summer, it will indicate that Hodgson has decided to prioritise solidity over talent in his defence.

Cahill and Smalling are solid defenders at their best, but neither is capable of brining the ball out and playing from defence as Stones is.

Having that sort of player in the team could be crucial to England’s hopes of breaking down the more stubborn sides, and it will be intriguing to see if Hodgson ends up ruing the decision to leave out the Everton man.
